Eurogamer’s Editor caught up with John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead for a little interview, the subjects being id’s Tech5 licensing, Digital Distribution and ofcourse, what they think about Piracy. And surprisingly, id views Piracy as a hidden benefit to developers:

Todd Hollenshead: There’s lots of things that they could do but typically just they just line up on the wrong side of the argument in my opinion. They have lots of reasons as to why they do that, but I think that there’s been this dirty little secret among hardware manufacturers, which is that the perception of free content - even if you’re supposed to pay for it on PCs - is some sort hidden benefit that you get when you buy a PC, like a right to download music for free or a right to download pirated movies and games.

Wolfenstein 3D turns 16

3D Realms have announced the 16th birthday of Wolfenstein 3D. The legendary first-person-shooter turned 16th this past monday.

We don’t know if you realized it, but Monday was the sixteenth anniversary of Wolfenstein 3D. Released by Apogee back on May 5, 1992, this game by all accounts was one of the all time most influential titles, well.. EVER! Originally created by id Software, and released by us (under our then name Apogee Software), this title laid the groundwork for a lot of things that have come since.

It’s just their preference,” explained Nix
