Randy Pitchford Talks, Brags about Xbox Live Gamerscore

Randy Pitchford is quickly becoming one of the more annoying personalities in video gaming industry, Following CliffyB and Peter Molyneux. Gamasutra has a long 10 page interview (cheap way to get page views….) with Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software. Here’s a snip:

Burnout is a problem, and it can happen to anybody. Even in our studio, we’ve crunched. We care a lot about the results. Sometimes there’s the reality of, “Wow, we’re landing and we really want to make this better,” and we’re all working really hard to do that.

And sometimes, it’s really interesting how people are. We’re not saving the world. We’re making video games. But we tend to take a lot of pressure on ourselves, because we all want to do a good job. For some people, that’s a real problem, so things like burnout and disillusionment can happen.

It’s important that we try and remember why we’re doing it, and get back to playing games. Play the games and try to find ways that we can enjoy the process of making them.

Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway Demo Coming Soon

Speaking at Ubidays 08 with Videogamer.com, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software has confirmed a demo for their upcoming FPS; Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. The release date for the demo is unsure, but the retail version is set to ship out in August 2008.

“We’ve had Brothers in Arms games before,” he said. “People know what the brand is about. In general we’ve got a reasonable amount of trust. There’s a lot of people who know that they want the game and they’re just tired of waiting and they want us to get it out as soon as possible so we’re focusing on that. But there are some other folks who might be new to us, they don’t know if they should trust us yet or maybe they haven’t played a Brothers in Arms game before. We’ll get around to a demo for them and we’ve got it in our plans for that.”

Randy Pitchford Defends In-game Advertising Deal

Gearbox software’s CEO, Randy Pitchford has defended their decision to go the in-game adveritising route. Pitchford posted an entry on the Gearbox Community website, here’s a snip:

I’d like to take the time to shed more light on the announcement that Gearbox and Double Fusion are partnering to consider connecting advertising with our games. Some gamers have voiced their concern, and I want to set the record straight about this announcement.

We respect any contempt for exploitive advertising that negatively effects the integrity or the quality of the game because we, as hardcore gamers, share that same contempt. If anything, that’s a big understatement. I’ll say it again: We hate exploitive advertising that doesn’t offer value to the gamer.

We partnered with Double Fusion because we believe they approach this kind of thing with the right attitude and because we wanted to be in control of these kinds of decisions for some of our games. It is important for us to ensure that we’re able to keep our artistic interests in mind and that our gamer customers’ interests are cared for.

Borderlands Delayed

In the same Investor QnA in which BioShock 2 went official, Take-Two have announced that Gearbox Software’s upcoming sci-fi first person shooter has been delayed from the original Fiscal Year 2008 to Fiscal Year 2009. From the official press release:

Fiscal 2008 guidance reflects the release of Borderlands for Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 and Games for Windows® in fiscal 2009 instead of fiscal 2008 in order to allow additional development time for this highly anticipated game and provide a better balance in the release of Take-Two’s triple-A titles.
