Microsoft Getting Ready for Digital Distribution

ms-dd_steam_

With the recent Games for Windows LIVE update, Microsoft has climbed another step to reach the Digital Distribution door. The software conglomerate has been eying digital distribution for a while now and we may soon see Microsoft launching a dedicated Games for Windows LIVE Application to compete with the likes of Steam and Impulse. Whilst content such as games and DLC. (Although, given its Microsoft, don’t expect it to be free) How will Microsoft fare against Valve’s gigantic userbase, their comparatively unintrusive DRM and constant product support? Only time will tell.

When we get to the place where we do distribute games digitally, will we have a digital rights management system? Maybe. Or maybe we’ll just continue to support the industry leaders in that. Because it is a hard thing to do. You talk to any of those companies, and that is their whole company, is doing digital rights management.

Alan Wake is Alive & Kicking, New Trailer Coming on 15th!

alan-wake-is-alive

To everyone’s surprise, Alan Wake is not vaporware. The mysterious action/adventure title, announced back in 2005, is still in development. Remedy’s writer Sami Järvi revealed this in an interview/podcast with the Finnish Magazine Pelaaj.

Why is it taking so long? Well, according to Remedy (The geniuses behind Max Payne games) they are rather short of bandwidth. With the game being so open-world and huge, it’s taking their small team a while to get everything ready. Oddly enough, with a huge Publisher like Take-Two backing them, it’s rather puzzling that they haven’t expanded their team. Make sure you checkout the full Podcast to get all the juicy details about the title. There’s also a new trailer that will be shown in Finland on 15th.

We’ve got Remedy’s lead writer Sami Järvi taking part in our special Pelaaja podcast, where we discuss the upcoming Alan Wake trailer.

Topics of discussion include: why release a new trailer now and what are Remedy’s hopes with it, the way they are approaching storytelling in an open world game. Also, since this is the first time in two years that they talk about the game, has something significantly changed in the game’s design and the improving quality of videogame’s scripts in recent years.

Obviously, we ask why it’s taking so long to finish the game, but that’s mostly due to the small team size and owning the IP giving Remedy the chance to work on the game longer than most etc.

radeonhd4800

AMD, touting it’s support for DirectX 10.1 API, has announced 3 titles that will support DX 10.1 when they’re released on PC. Namely;

BattleForge (EA)
Stormrise (SEGA)
Cloud 9 (NHN)

The most interesting thing, perhaps, is that Stormrise was announced as an RTS especially designed for consoles and not the PC. You can bet SEGA isn’t too happy about the surprise platform getting leaked before they could announce it themselves. Read more

DirectX 11 Is Official

 crysis.png

The original rumor was true as Microsoft has officially announced DirectX 11. Details below:

Features include new shader technology that begins to allow developers to position GPUs as more general-purpose parallel processors, rather than being dedicated solely to graphics processing; better multi-threading capabilities; and hardware-based tesselation.

Said newly promoted Microsoft’s Entertainment Business Division CTO Chris Satchell during a Gamefest keynote, “We want to break away from purely having a paradigm of pixels, vertices and shaders.”

DirectX 11 will be backwards compatible with DirectX10/9. Though with the lack of DirectX10 applications/game and the miserable adoption rate (due to consolization), it’ll be interesting to see how well DirectX 11 is received.
