White Gold Preview

CVG has a nice preview of Deep Shadows’s upcoming title; White Gold. Here’s a snippet:

With White Gold’s play area consisting of six large islands and 50 smaller ones dotted about them, you might think that you’ve seen similar free-roaming fare with games like Just Cause.

What sets White Gold apart though, is its grounding in roleplay. You may well be able to drive tanks and nip around on quad bikes, but this Caribbean jet setting will be complemented by an inventory system straight out of Deus Ex and a full set of roleplay perks and experience.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Preview

CVG has a hands-on preview of THQ’s upcoming title Red Faction: Guerrilla. Red Faction: Guerrilla will be the third game in the Red Faction franchise and is set 50 years after Red Faction 2. Unlike the predessors, Red Faction: Guerrilla is no longer an FPS, instead, the game has become a free-roaming third-person-shooter. Here’s a bit from the preview:

It’s almost like a modern take on the Wild West - humans are establishing settlements and frontier towns in an attempt to colonise the planet. Naturally - since the human race can’t agree on anything without getting into a fight - war breaks out and you, Alec Mason, the man in the fluorescent builder’s jacket, find yourself in the middle of an all-out extra-terrestrial war zone. Which is the perfect excuse to stomp all over the EDF’s buildings, vehicles and soldiers in giant robots and smash them with massive hammers.

Valve’s Doug Lombardi talks Portal 2, Left 4 Dead and future plans

At the recent EA games showcase in london, CVG sat down with Valve’s Dough Lombardi to discuss Valve’s upcoming game Left 4 Dead. Lombardi also talked about Portal 2, Source engine and Valve’s expansion into new genres. Here’s a snip:

How much has the Source engine been updated for L4D since Half-Life 2?

Lombardi: I would say that almost half the code has been developed since Half-Life 2 was released. We introduced new lighting effects, we did a lot of character animation work for HL2: Episode 2, added support for multi-core PCs, we worked on the physics for Portal and new AI added for L4D.

We look at Source as a set of tools, not necessarily as an engine that we’ve built that we’ll use until it expires and throw away. We see it as this organic thing that we’re constantly tweaking and building. It’s more of a toolkit than a set engine.

Valve talks Portal sequel; More Innovative than original

CVG scored an interview with Valve’s Doug Lombardi, Valve have revealed few details about how they’re going to go about Portal 2. Here’s a snip:

“It could have been one of those things that 20,000 people thought was really cool and everybody else just scratched their heads and thought ‘What the hell is this, I don’t get it’,” added Lombardi.

Of course, the game was huge, which makes a sequel crucial. “Now we’ve got this challenge of living up to what we did with that.

The Agency Preview

CVG got to chat with Sony Entertainment Online’s Kevin O’Hara about their upcoming MMO The Agency. Here’s a snippet:

“We’ll also have PvP maps where you can choose either side of the battle regardless of your agency,” continues O’Hara. “But if you don’t like PvP, don’t worry, you won’t ever have to do it, but hopefully it should be easy enough that everybody tries it out to see it isn’t as punishing as many MMOs.”

CVG has the word that Rein was absolutely blown away by the upcoming 50 cent game. No, really!

“We’re obviously an Unreal Engine 3 licensee and he just came in for a visit and said ‘oh my god, I can’t believe you’re working on this, it looks phenomenal’. That was it; it wasn’t anything particularly formal, he came in to say hello to his licensees and was blown away by it. That was great for us.”

CVG sat down with Funcom to get a hands-on experience with this upcoming MMORPG. Here’s a snip:

It’s been eight months since I last sat down with Age of Conan and tactfully described its combat system innovation as an “awkward beast”. Since then, the game’s been delayed to allow that system to go under the knife. A recent invitation for a second date with the MMO revealed that, in the intervening period, Funcom has introduced what can only be described as - breathe a of relief - positive changes.
