Who you gonna call when your release of an old movie-to-game adoption gets axed and is in trouble? Atari apparently. The troubled publisher has picked up the game for release. This, after the game was cancelled by Activision.
Atari, one of the world’s most recognized video game publishers, announced today the addition of the highly anticipated Ghostbusters: The Video Game to its 2009 release schedule. Working closely with Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc. and acclaimed development studio Terminal Reality, Atari will bring this completely new story to advanced gaming platforms coinciding with the 25th anniversary celebration of the film’s original theatrical release. Ghostbusters: The Video Game, based on the smash hit motion picture franchise, also reunites original cast members to recapture the unique blend of humour and fright that established Ghostbusters as a pop culture sensation.

Hardware based encryption chip to cure Piracy?

All the lousy pirates can now get ready to walk the plank as hardware based encryption will soon make PC games piracy impossible. Speaking at Wedbush Morgan Securities annual Management Access Conference; Nolan Bushwell, founder of Atari, revealed details about the hardware based anti-piracy measure:
There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now,” he pointed out
“What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world - which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords - which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem.
Har har!
Alone in the Dark - Developer Diary 2

Atari released another developer diary for their upcoming survival-horror title; Alone in the Dark. The game’s lead designer Hervé Sliwa sheds some more light on the on-going development.
We were so impressed by the legacy of Alone in the Dark we wanted something very ambitious and very innovative, so the first proposal was in fact maybe a little bit too ambitious and too innovative, which meant it looked very risky to a producer. And we had a difficult start – the project was killed once, and after that we were so motivated to make this game, we worked on it and came back with a technical demo and a proof of concept of all the most risky elements, and Atari said OK let’s take the risk, and since then we’ve had full support to develop the game. Pre-production started in 2003 then full production started 2 years ago in early 2006. The team built up very fast and today there is around 120 people working on the game.
